Amani is the name of a village in the East Usambara Mountains. It is in Muheza District, Tanga Region. Amani means peace in Kiswahili and at the same time, this peaceful place is suffering from environmental degradation by a variety of human activities, such as gold mining, timber harvesting, and agricultural encroachment.
After recognizing the environmental problems and being aware of the future of this important area for biodiversity and for local communities, a few residents of this area decided to establish the “Amani Friends of Nature” to safeguard this special place.
