Amani is the name of a village in the East Usambara Mountains. It is in Muheza District, Tanga Region. Amani means peace in Kiswahili and at the same time, this peaceful place is suffering from environmental degradation by a variety of human activities, such as gold mining, timber harvesting, and agricultural encroachment. After recognizing the environmental problems and being aware of the future of this important area for biodiversity and for local communities, a few residents of this area decided to establish the "Amani Friends of Nature" to safeguard this special place.
We envision that local communities will learn about biodiversity and use their traditional knowledge cooperatively to sustainably use, restore habitat and conserve natural resources in the Eastern Arc Mountains for generations to come.
To learn about, share, and conserve the traditions and natural resources which we have inherited from our elders and ancestors. Learning, sharing and conserving our resources will build cooperation among local communities that will sustain our future.
